A Heart Like a Calm, Clear Pool of Water

True compatibility is essential to a loving and thriving marriage. More than just similar background, education, or even marriage vision and life goals, true compatibility along with mutual understanding and trust, facilitates the complete surrendering of hearts within marriage. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “Souls are like recruited soldiers – whichever get acquainted and are similar and mutually compatible, they bond and attach to one another with affection…” When there is complete surrendering of hearts, spouses are able and willing to be mirrors for each other. According to the well-known hadith, “The believer is a mirror of his brother (or sister).” Spouses reflect each other, both beauty and flaws, peacefully and lovingly, helping us to know ourselves better and supporting our continual striving for improvement. To be as a mirror for the spouse, the heart must be like a calm clear pool of water, the soul peaceful and open.
