The Quran tells us that “…man is impatient, given to haste (17:11). This is so true. In fact, we often eat with haste. We read, talk, and even pray too often with haste. Fasting can help us to slow down, to step outside the “rapid-fire culture” which is consuming us. As long as we remain steeped in the frenzy of the contemporary world, we will be unable to glimpse the beauty and power of being aware, reflective, and humble. Rather, let’s walk through life as if, as Imam Ibn Taymiyah said, “…it is tourism of Allah’s domain.” Then we feel awe and thankfulness for the bounty and miracle of life; and we will seek many moments of quiet reflection.
In stillness we touch the true inner being of our souls.
